Inspiration
More prints that are inspired-by-but-not-in-the-same-league-of-other-artists.
This time, Stephen Dow, printmaker working as heraldBLACK. Mr. Dow uses paper masks to create abstract prints. His prints look simple at first glance, but he creates depth and interest by repeated layering. The techniques he uses include screenprinting, monoprinting, and collographs. I find myself trying to figure out the steps he took to get to the final print. heraldBLACK's Facebook.
My prints, from the Gelli Arts printing plate, are below. Paper is copy paper.
You can make similar prints by using paper or lightweight card stock cut into very simple shapes to make masks. Keep moving the shapes around on the Gelli Arts plate each time you add another layer of printing. To make prints that look more like Mr. Dow's, use a very limited set of colors, perhaps adding in white or or black paint to make subtle changes in tints and shades.
